Penkridge

Market town heritage

Welcome to Penkridge, brimming with medieval prestige, coaching‑house flair, peaceful canal side views, and a community pulse that’s as welcoming as its centuries‑old pubs.

Penkridge has always been a hub of activity. Its twice-weekly market and monthly food and craft fair continue a legacy dating back to the 15th century, when horse fairs were a regular fixture. Legend even suggests that King Edgar once made Penkridge the capital of England for three days.

Visitors can explore a village steeped in heritage from the medieval St. Michael’s and All Angels Church to the 14th-century Old Bridge and its Tudor buildings. Or walk in J.R.R. Tolkien's footsteps through landscapes that inspired his Middle-earth in The Lord of the Rings.

Wander through Market Street and the Old Market Square, and you’ll spot historical relics such as the village stocks and the old cells, silent witnesses to medieval justice. The Old Gaol in the Heritage Centre preserves local stories, bringing history to life.

Transport has played a key role in Penkridge's growth. The canal first brought trade, then the railway spurred a boom, and later the A449 and M6 cemented its importance as a well-connected village.

Penkridge is also a village that knows how to celebrate. The annual Santa Dash, the Penkridge Fun Run, the Big Market, and the Christmas lights switch-on, all bring the community together, while the Civic Centre hosts everything from weddings to Chinese temple performances.

For families, adventure is never far away. Play @ Lower Drayton Farm offers zip wire adventures, jungle soft play, giant inflatable rides.

With a proud history to its bustling present, Penkridge is a place that welcomes visitors to discover every part of its story.
