Great Wyrley

Rooted in history, built on community

Nestled just north of Cannock and a stone’s throw from Cannock Chase, Great Wyrley offers plenty to explore for visitors seeking an authentic English village experience.

The village traces its name back to Anglo-Saxon times, recorded as Wyrle in 1044 and later Wyrley in the Domesday Book. Centuries later, the Civil War left its mark with battles fought near Wyrley Farm between Roundheads and Loyalists.

Mining once defined this area, and its legacy remains firmly in the landscape. The Wyrley and Essington Canal, once a vital transport route for coal, now offers a peaceful walking path, where remnants of the pits blend with nature.

Independent shops, cozy cafes, and centuries-old pubs brimming with a warm atmosphere are all on the high street. Whether you’re after a traditional bakery treat or a friendly local butcher, you’ll find welcoming faces and quality offerings.

One of Great Wyrley’s best-kept secrets is its proximity to Cannock Chase AONB (Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). Just a short drive or cycle ride away, this vast expanse of forest offers hiking and mountain biking trails, countless wildlife watching opportunities to spot deer, birds of prey, and rare butterflies, as well as historical relics, including WWII bunkers and ancient hill forts.

Closer to the village, enjoy leisurely walks through Great Wyrley Common, perfect for picnics, dog walks, and seasonal events.

The annual Wyrley Festival celebrates local arts, music, and crafts with street fairs and live performances. Seasonal markets and fairs bring the community together, showcasing local produce and handmade goods.

Great Wyrley is well connected by rail and road, ideal for a day trip or a longer stay.
