Staffordshire Moorlands Shopping & Markets
The Staffordshire Moorlands towns are proudly independent, providing the backdrop for a unique retail experience that goes way beyond what can be found on a usual high street.
Head to the district to find shopping and markets, antiques, independent retail and produce and goods proudly made in the Staffordshire Moorlands, with a focus on quality, choice and individuality.
There’s a definite vibe to The Totally Locally Leek Sunday Supplement market, held on the first Sunday of every month (apart from January) with up to 80 stalls featuring handmade artisan products and local food. Many of Leek’s independent shops, cafes and pubs are open for the day too, to add to the atmosphere.
The sensitively and imaginatively restored Getliffe’s Yard is a wonderful early 19th Century space, transformed into a shopping and dining experience that captivates visitors.
History continues at the recently refurbished Butter and Trestle Market in Leek, although the name belies the fact that there’s much more to browse and buy in the atmospheric Victorian building, including local fresh food produce gifts, homeware, ladieswear, four food outlets selling hot food to eat in and much more
Markets towns and days in the Staffordshire Moorlands are the bedrock of activity across the region.
Leek
Markets have been at the heart of the town’s shopping experience since the first Royal Market charter was issued by King John granting Ranulph de Blondeville, 6th Earl of Chester, the right to hold a weekly Wednesday market and an annual seven-day fair in Leek in 1207. Fast forward another 800 years and the town's markets are still thriving.
In Leek, market days are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
Biddulph
Biddulph offers a Twilight Market on the First Friday of each month, and additional bespoke markets with specific themes.
There are also opportunities to buy fresh food on the Town Hall steps throughout the month.
Cheadle
Cheadle has two established markets where visitors can shop for a bargain. Cheadle's Weekly Outdoor Market on Fridays takes place on Greyhound Walk and is becoming an essential weekly destination for visitors and locals alike. The town’s High Street Indoor and Outdoor Markets are held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Specialist markets are a major attraction for visitors to the Staffordshire Moorlands, with each town having its own unique stamp, with themes including vintage, crafts and collectables.
It’s a source of pride that shopping in the Staffordshire Moorlands is an attractive package for visitors, because of the high number of independent retailers, which collectively provide opportunities to browse and buy goods that are unique and unusual, in interesting and varied retail spaces – and with many items inspired by the local environment.
Did you know Leek is famed as a centre for antiques? Visitors from across the UK and even the world head to the district to find hidden gems, and with a high concentration of antique shops located across the town, it has become the place to find those special pieces to treasure.
