Imported ImageA new multi million-pound car park has opened in Stoke-on-Trent.

The site at the Smithfield development was due to be operational in October but opened on Monday after further safety checks were carried out.

There are more than 700 spaces, and drivers can park all day for just £1 until 1 January.

It is part of a wider regeneration of the Smithfield area in Hanley comprising apartments and offices.

Cllr Daniel Jellyman, cabinet member for regeneration, infrastructure, and heritage, said: “Our newly built 730-space multi-storey car park is one of the safest in the city, with limits on access, so that you can only enter the site if you have parked there. We want visitors to the city to feel safe at any time of the day, especially at night, and this introductory parking offer of £1 for all day, will help support this.

“There is lots on offer in all of our towns, from great places to eat to fantastic independent shops. We want to encourage footfall into our towns, both for shoppers and visitors.”

The demolition of the 1960’s surface car park on the site has now paved the way for the multi-storey car park showcasing a state-of-the-art cycle storage hub and disabled vehicle bays. Rapid shutters will also be installed, and until then, security will be onsite 24/7.

The facility also offers 120-cycle spaces and 10-cycle lockers.

Sustainable light systems are also installed, external lighting powered by sensors will turn off during the day and interior lights on all decks and stairwells are motion censored, after five minutes they reduce to 50% lighting and then turn off after a further five minutes unless a vehicle or person enters.
