The whole of the Midlands including Staffordshire will benefit from the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the county council leader said today.
Staffordshire could host one of the events, with Cannock Chase being lined up to potentially stage the mountain biking competition if it is selected as one of the optional sports.
Staffordshire County Council leader Philip Atkins said: “It is great news for the Midlands now Birmingham has finally been selected to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games. I am sure the whole of the Midlands including Staffordshire will benefit.
“Mountain biking is one of the optional sporting events which could be included at the games. Cannock Chase has been mentioned as a potential venue which is not surprising as it is a nationally renowned location for the activity.
“It would give us another opportunity to showcase Staffordshire internationally, with leading sportsmen and women competing here.
“Whether or not mountain biking is selected, we would expect to see an economic boost for Staffordshire and the Midlands with the large number of visitors generated by the games, making the most of our shops, restaurants and other attractions.”
