Welcome to Tamworth
Unlock the secrets of Tamworth, from Anglo-Saxon kings and castle ghosts to the glittering Staffordshire Hoard. Tamworth is a town where ancient ramparts meet riverside strolls, and where you can still hear echoes of history in every cobbled corner.
Perched on the confluence of the Rivers Anker and Tame, Tamworth is no ordinary market town. It was once the capital of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Mercia and is home to one of the most impressive motte and bailey castles in the UK. Built in the 1080s, on the orders of the Normans, Tamworth Castle is full of surprises.
Royal legends echo in its ancient, haunted walls. Climb the tower for panoramic views and uncover Anglo-Saxon gold in the remarkable Staffordshire Hoard exhibition. See the very artefacts that stunned archaeologists and connected Tamworth to one of the most significant treasure finds in history.
This is a town that’s small in size, but big on connections. Tamworth boasts a host of claims to fame, which have put it firmly on the global map. Latterly well-known for the Tamworth Two, this Staffordshire town is also the home of the quirky three-wheeled Reliant motorcar and where Sir Robert Peel, founder of the modern police force and twice serving Prime Minister, made Tamworth his home at Drayton Manor.
Tamworth is bordered by Warwickshire, Derbyshire, and Leicestershire, and is just 15 minutes by train from Birmingham and just over an hour direct from London Euston. It’s easy to reach and with so many things to do, it's the perfect escape for a day, or a family weekend Away.
